New motorcycle tires need a break-in period for full traction. Fresh off the shelf, the tread has a slick surface layer, so a brand-new tire won't grip like a broken-in one, especially in the first few miles.
Whether we just mounted your tires or you put them on yourself, here's how to scrub them in safely, plus a quick checklist to run before every ride.
Don't Skip the Scrub-In
Ride gently for the first 100 miles. That removes the slick layer and helps the tires become conditioned to the road.
Take It Easy for 100 Miles
Avoid sharp turns, hard braking, and sudden acceleration while the tires break in. Smooth inputs let the whole tread scuff in evenly.
Build Up Lean Gradually
The edges of the tread are the last part to scrub in. Work up to deeper lean angles a little at a time instead of diving into the first corner.
Give Cold and Wet Roads Extra Room
New tires are at their slickest when they're cold, and wet pavement makes it worse. On a chilly morning or a wet road, add extra following distance and brake early.

Match the cold pressure to your bike's spec sticker. Wrong pressure means poor handling and fast tire wear.

Headlight, brake light, and turn signals all working make you easier to see.
Check the Brakes
Grip the levers and listen for odd noises. Levers should feel firm, not spongy.
Inspect the Chain
Check for wear and tear, correct tension, and lube.
Check Fluids
Check fluid levels and look for leaks or damage under the bike.
